OVERVIEW and TARGET AUDIENCE

The meeting provides an opportunity for information exchange and learning from behavioral sleep medicine (BSM) experts and an opportunity for trainees of all levels, clinicians, and population scientists to obtain a review of BSM theory and practice.

Session 1 is devoted to discussing the changing reality and the growing body of knowledge related to cannabis and sleep and involves symposia on insomnia and multidimensional sleep health, plus the impact of school start times. The oral poster data blitzes address adolescent sleep, school psychology and behavioral sleep medicine, plus therapy for insomnia and pain.

Session 2 features an emphasis on pediatric and circadian sleep medicine. Judith Owens, MD will present on Pediatric Melatonin Use, and Sabra Abbott, MD, PhD will discuss the Science of Circadian Rhythm Disorders across the lifespan. The oral poster data blitz sessions will spotlight the latest research in pediatric sleep a focus on adult sleep to include research on a variety of topics including cognition, TBI, and pain.

Session 3 will help you find new and better ways to navigate real world practice, and today’s challenges in clinical practice: we are seeing clients through a screen, and they are bringing a wide array of comorbidities, diversity, medication interactions, and individual differences. To address these patients, our presenters will translate what we have learned in the literature into real-world practice with a focus on telemedicine, discussions of how to conduct BSM in real world settings, with real world diversity, and targeting significant comorbidities such as suicidal ideation, which is associated with many sleep disorders.

Session 4 focuses on insomnia, assessment, and treatments. Specific symposia are devoted for vigilance and insomnia as well as therapy components for insomnia disorder. The lightning rounds will cover sleep in athletes as well as a discussion weighing face-to-face visits against internet-based CBT-I approaches. In the oral poster data blitzes, new data will be presented on actigraphy-derived sleep across the life span, ecological momentary assessment of planned behavior and sleep opportunity, sleep architecture in older adults with chronic pain, and racial disparities in sleep in patients with chronic pain.
